Celebrating five decades of P450

Following initial observation of a new carbon monoxide-binding pigment in liver microsomes by Martin Klingenberg and David Garfinkel, Tsuneo Omura and Ryo Sato identified and characterized it as a b-type cytochrome, later termed cytochrome P450. Their seminal publication in the Journal of Biological Chemistry in 1964 was the “birth” of cytochrome P450 research.
